Connect. Disconnect. Coffee. Chocolate. Wife. Husband. Married. Family. Brother. Sister. When. Slow. Laugh. Black. Because. Picture. Smart. Cool. What's up. Always. Home. Come.
These are some of the signs we learned during Learn-a-New-Sign-Every-Day-April. I forgot how learning a new language really brings on the giggles. Maybe it's something about stepping out of your comfort zone and watching someone you love do the same. Or just watching each other goof up. Or trying to work words into everyday sentences. One favorite to sign this month was "because." We'd try to fit it in as much as we could: one of us pushes the other; "why'd you do that?"; sign: because. For some reason, it's really funny. Want to learn a few basics? We're excited to see Tim's brother Pat, who is deaf, so we can practice our new signs in earnest. He is so patient with our slow and clumsy sentences.
We're enjoying this new-thing thing so much, this month we're doubling up. Our original plan was no eating out, which we're sticking with, but we're adding no TV, too. I just recently got some potentially exciting, but also freaky news: the academic year of 2015-16 will be my last at my current job. The Jesuit university I have worked at for the last 5 years is not renewing a whole host of one year contracts, so I am being released to try something new! I've been dabbling with the idea of trying to make it as a writer, and this is giving me a gentle but instant shove in that direction. And Tim is always want to write more, too, so we figure it's time to turn off the tube for a bit and see if that makes a difference.
I also want to be outside enjoying this perfect weather more, especially before it gets too hot for anything put laying under a sprinkler or by the lake. The above picture is from a walk we took in Kaui'i over winter break. Less TV always means more adventuring, and after a winter inside in our cozy small home with a baby who naps every two-three hours, I'm ready to stretch my creaky adventure muscles.
