Last week we decided that come hell or high water, we were going to comic book day. Then Saturday rolled around and we remembered that we had to check on my parent's house (which turned to raiding their cupboards for a snack), return some books to the library (which turned into checking out more books), and go on a hike with some friends and their cute kids (had to is not the right verb phrase for this item on the list). We also planned on squeezing in a nap for Beckett, too. All of this was to happen before we packed ourselves up for the 3PM birthday party of Beckett's brother from another mother, Nelson. If you can' tell where this is going, we did not make it to Free Comic Book Day on Saturday.
BUT! It's nice when there's a but and an exclamation point, like: my car wouldn't start on Saturday evening, BUT(!) it started up on Sunday morning without explanation (this is true). It's not syntactically correct, BUT(!) who cares. Back to this BUT!: although we missed the author signings and stuff--we really wanted a sketch by local badass artist Manny Trembley, who was on a Get Lit! comic panel that Tim moderated--they extended the giving away of comics to Sunday, so we were able to get in on the fun and see a bunch of achy-legged Bloomsday runners hobbling to their cars after post race pig outs in the process.
The guy working there was really nice, telling us all about our choices. We suspect that he comes out just for Free Comic Book Day since we've never seen him there before. Normally they make me us feel a little like we are on the outside of a very exclusive club. In all fairness, we sort of are, or I am at least. But it was nice to feel welcomed for a change.

We each received two, but it was clear as the dude at the desk was going through available options that I would give up one of mine to Tim. There he is looking through his goodies. What a babe of a nerd. He snagged Hip Hop Family Tree, ICE, and The Stuff of Legend. Tim also bought a book, because he felt "he really should" and "it was only right." :) I grabbed the most non-comicy comic that was there. What a lame-o. Comic Super Girl, I am not. But I really like it. And Tim reaffirmed that is was a good choice since he's been hearing good things about Kate Beaton. And Beckett, as you can see, was given a free food pouch by his mom and dad. He's always getting free stuff.
Beckett is sleeping away, so I'm going to sneak out back to soak up some sunshine, drink my perpetually cold cup of coffee, and put my nose in a book. Thanks Merlyn's. You rule, snarky employees and all.
